Contemplative Prayer for a Disoriented Season of Life:

LORD, we are not in control, we remember that now.

“My soul waits for the Lord more than the watchmen for the morning…for with the Lord there is steadfast love!” (Psalm 130:6-7)  Now more than ever, I watch for you each morning to renew me, to strengthen me, to lead me and guide me.

“Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.  [even now! We can look back to the hard times our grandparents went through, knowing YOU are the SAME!!!]  Before the mountains were born or You gave birth to the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting You are God.” (Psalm 90:1-2)  We are weary, but You will never be exhausted by what we are going through, for You are everlasting. You are still our dwelling, our refuge, our strength, our strong tower.

“Though I walk [or stay home] in the midst of trouble, You will revive me;  the LORD will accomplish what concerns me, Your steadfast love, O LORD, is everlasting!” (Psalm 138:7a, 8)  We have burdens on our plates that were not there before–this seems impossible at times. The burden is too great to bear alone.  How will I do this without the physical presence of my fellow sisters in Christ? I look to You to accomplish what concerns me and my little ones.

“Because of his strength I will watch for You, for God is my stronghold.  My God in His steadfast love will meet me;” (Psalm 59:9-10a) My fears, my worries, the unknown future–because of all this, I will watch for You.  The new responsibilities, the new routines, the glitches I come up against…because of these I will watch for You. Your love will prove stronger, my hope is secure in You.

“Be gracious to me, O God, be gracious to me, for my soul takes refuge in You; and in the shadow of Your wings I take refuge until destruction passes by.” (Psalm 57:1-2)  You know how long this will last, I do not. You know the tribulations we face, the sickness that is afflicting many, the changes that we must endure; and through this I want to cuddle up in the shadow of Your wings.  Hold me close LORD, and let me feel the warmth of Your loving care. Pour your love and light into my soul, that I may still pour into my children, and usher them into Your care.

“Blessed by the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our afflictions…” (2 Corinthians 1:3)  We praise You LORD, knowing that You understand our situation, and are powerful enough to comfort, help, and guide us. We look to the cross, remembering just how much You love us.  Your love endures forever, and will outlast this disoriented season we face. Teach us how to make that real to our children. Let us comfort them.

“Satisfy us in the morning with Your unfailing love!” (Psalm 90:14). Every morning, LORD. Every morning…

  1. I love this a lot!! So many beautiful expressions of a heart longing for more of you Jesus!! This was one of my favorites….”and through this I want to cuddle up in the shadow of Your wings.” Thank you for being an encouragement with your praise to our Heavenly Father!

  2. Contemplative prayer used to be my go-to, but now when silence is at a premium, I’ve forgotten that practice. Thank you for bringing it back (even as my kids are by my side, chattering away…)
